How to Start an Ancestor Altar: A Step-by-Step Guide

To start an ancestor altar, establish a clean, private, dedicated space, like a chest, shelf or small table, covered with a white cloth. You can even set up in a spare closet. Set up the essentials, including a clear glass of water (for connection), a white candle (for light/guidance), and photos or heirlooms of ancestors. Refresh the water and light the candle regularly, ideally with prayers, to honor and communicate with your ancestors.  Here is An Ancestor Prayer

Ancestor oil is a specialized spiritual oil blend of herbs and roots used ancestral veneration to honor, protect, and communicate with departed loved ones and ancestral spirits. It is commonly used to anoint candles, altars, or oneself to invite guidance, wisdom, and blessings from your lineage. Here is Another Ancestor Prayer.

Key Aspects of Ancestor Oil:

Ancestor oil is primarily used for establishing connection in ancestor work, seeking guidance, ancestral healing, bringing blessings, and creating a bridge for communication with the Spirit world.

Common ingredients in my Ancestor oil often contain holy resins like Frankincense, Myrrh, or Copal; some batches contain wood essences like Cypress, Cedarwood or Sandalwood; and other batches have herbs such as Patchouli, Sage, Mugwort, or Vetiver or whatever special flowers I may have grown that year.

Dressing Candles: Apply a few drops of Ancestor oil on white or brown candles on an ancestor altar, including Saint or Angel candles. Sprinkle drops around an area to bless it and bring peace. This can include any religious altar, shrine, temple, or sacred space, even those located outside or dedicated to nature/the Elements.

Anointing: Apply Ancestor oil to the pulse points or Third Eye chakra for personal connection when meditation, communing or attending worship services.

Offerings: Add drops of Ancestor oil to water or oil lamps placed on an altar. Anoint any gifts to enhance feelings of gratitude and connection with your ancestral guides.

Ritual Baths: Add a few drops of Ancestor oil for spiritual cleansing and protection from evil eye.

REMINDER: a glass of water and a white candle (with the oil on it) to call your folks is the simplest start. Offer incense, food, snacks, drinks and other items as needed or as time progresses.

Important Steps to Set Up Your Ancestor Altar

  • Choose a Private Location: Choose a quiet, respectful space like a closet, nightstand, shelf, or top of a dresser that can serve as a permanent or semi-permanent, sacred spot.

  • Purify the Area: Use frankincense, sandalwood, or even Florida Water to clear the energy of the area before setting up.

  • The Setup: Cover your surface with a clean, white cloth. Use this Prayer for the Dead & Spirit Guides if you don’t know what to say after introducing yourself.

  • The Four Elements: Ensure the altar represents the elements:

    • Water: A clear glass or bowl of water (the most crucial item, representing a direct line of communication with the deceased). Change the water when it’s cloudy.

    • Fire: A white candle to guide spirits.

    • Air: Incense (such as Benzoin, Frankincense, Copal, or Palo Santo).

    • Earth: Crystals, stones, or potted plants.

    • Add Ancestral Items: Place photos of your deceased loved ones, their personal belongings (jewelry, letters, eyeglasses), or written names of ancestors if you have no pictures.

Offerings (Vices and Foods): Offer items they enjoyed in life, such as whiskey, rum, tobacco, coffee, or favorite foods, to show love and respect.

 MAINTENANCE & USING ANCESTRAL ALTAR

  • Daily/Weekly Care: Be sure the water frequently (daily or every few days) to keep the connection clean, and burn candles or incense to keep the energy active. Anoint with oils and offer prayers for their spiritual elevation.

  • Frequent Interaction: Your people wanna hear from you! Talk to your ancestors, pray, or sit in meditation at the altar.

  • Keep it Positive: Focus on ancestors with protecting and guiding intentions, as not all deceased relatives may have your best interests at heart.

  • Biblical Connection: In some Southern Hoodoo traditions, a Bible is placed on the altar as a protective, central element or as a form of Bibliomancy. This is not a requirement or you may use other holy documents associated with your ancestral history.

GATHER THESE ITEMS:

  • Photographs: Photos of loved ones who have passed (avoid photos of the living). If you have no photos because of adoption or estrangement, you can write the names of all the ancestors (or family/tribal names) you DO know on a asheet of paper and add this to the altar.

  • Personal Belongings: Items that belonged to them, such as jewelry, letters, or ashes can go on the ancestor altar.

  • Symbolic Items: If photos are unavailable, use items that represent your lineage or the earth, like sand or currency from their ancestral homeland.

INTENTION IS KEY: The most important aspect of ancestral veneration is the love and respect you bring to the space and the honor you bestow upon the ancestors to uplift yourself and the lineage.

  • Keep it Safe: Never leave candles unattended.

  • Personalize It: Decorate your ancestor altar with items that evoke fond memories or represent your family's heritage.
